A subcontractor who last month forced a school to close for a day after he blocked the gate with thorn trees, demanding to be paid, has been given an ultimatum before getting his money.
Dan Mdluli, director of DEE Transport and Plant Hire, disrupted lessons at Soniye Primary School in Bushbuckridge when he demanded R12000 he claimed the education department owed him.
But yesterday QS Pro Quantity Surveyors, appointed by the education department, demanded that Mdluli repair cracked topping on walkways before he could be paid.
In a letter to Mdluli, Rudi Prinsloo of QS Pro also wants him to repair the roof and floor where the DEE damaged the classrooms.
"Retained funds will be used to buy material if this is not corrected within 10 days from this notice," the letter states.
QS Pro had also contracted Mdluli to revamp some of the classrooms at the school.
Mdluli used his front-end loader to dump piles of weeds and thorn trees from the nearby veld at the school gate.
Some of the children were so frightened they jumped over the fence to escape as they thought the front-end loader would crash into the school.
Mdluli said he was sub-contracted at the beginning of the month to demolish two old classroom blocks and remove the rubble.
He said he was, however, surprised when he was not paid after completing the job.
