An array of South African sports leaders will invade Durban this week to start mapping the way forward for the country's national and international competitions.

The two-day national sports indaba takes place today and tomorrow, with Minister of Sport and Recreation Makhenkesi Stofile delivering a keynote address.

Lerato Mogorosi, Stofile's spokesman, said the aim of the indaba was to develop an integrated strategy to accelerate development.

Stofile has convened the indaba after poor performances by various South African national sports teams, with the exception of the ever consistent Paralympians.

"The indaba will deal with critical topics like politics and sport, transformation and excellence as well as access to resources," said Mogorosi.

Butana Komphela, Moss Mashishi, Barbara Creecy, Sam Ramsamy and Mvuso Mbebe will be some of the speakers at this long overdue gathering of sports leaders.

Gauteng MEC for sport Creecy will chair the "Mass mobilisation to excellence" session on the first day of the indaba, which will be opened by KwaZulu-Natal premier Sbu Ndebele.

The second session of day will be conducted by Ace Magashule and Noxolo Abrahams-Ntantiso, sports MECs in Free State and Eastern Cape.

Mashishi will deal with the status of macro sport in South Africa, Komphela with politics and sport (access for all to opportunities), Ntambi Ravele with women in sport, Liz Bressan with sport for the disabled, Ramsamy with access to resources and Monde Tabata with sponsorship and equity.

Tomorrow there will be breakaway groups chaired by Mogorosi (politics and sport), Noma Kotelo (women in sport), Alison Burchell (sport for the disabled), Hajira Mashego (transformation and excellence), Irene Mpolweni (sponsorship and equity) and Sumaya Khan (monitoring and evaluation of transformation and development).

Tucker will make a presentation of the sport science indaba resolutions.
