Mama Angel is spreading joy around Johannesburg by giving pensioners slippers.

The slippers were donated by John Craig clothing store, represented by Nicole van Doninck, as part of their community outreach project.

The first recipients were 90 pensioners at Itlhokomeleng Home for the Aged in Alexandra.

When Mama Angel's Lindi Obose arrived, more than 20 pensioners were engrossed in their studies but broke off to receive their unexpected gifts. Old shoes, takkies and slippers were discarded as the oldies tried on their new expensive slippers.

"We at Itlhokomeleng want to thank Nicole and her company for realising that there are people out here who need their help," said Marjorie Manganye, the head of the home.

"We hope that other companies will follow John Craig's example. We appreciate the fact that Sowetan has not forgotten us and brought us these gifts. We are grateful to Mama Angel for all the support they have given us over the years."

Manganye appealed to Sowetan readers who are plumbers, handymen and electricians to volunteer at the home because some of the fixtures need to be repaired.

"We hope that the donation we made will assist to bring comfort to the residents. Thank you for allowing us to share this occasion with you," said Van Doninck.

Next stop was Emthonjeni Multipurpose Centre in Evaton. The centre has a herbarium whose produce is made into salves, lotions and herbal remedies. The centre needs a fence, an electric oven, bread slicer and cooling racks.
