Sunday World photographer Tshepo Kekana is lucky to be alive after he and his 19-year-old girlfriend were kidnapped on Saturday afternoon and held for six hours in Mamelodi West, Pretoria.
Kekana, 24, and Florence Mokoena, were accosted by three men armed with AK-47 rifles and ordered to move to the back seat of his white Golf Velocity.
"I was on my way to drop my girlfriend in section D6 when a white Ford Fiesta pulled up in front of us," Kekana says.
"The men pointed rifles at us and ordered us to the back seat. They then drove us to Mamelodi East, where I was interrogated about the location of my car's tracking device.
"The men threatened to rape my girlfriend if I did not show them the device," Kekana said. "They vandalised the car's interior in a frantic search for the device and ultimately found it."
The balaclava-clad trio then drove the terrified couple to section B3 in Mamelodi West.
"They took our cellphones and my photographic equipment and wallet. They hit me with a rifle butt when I said I did not know my bank PIN code.
"They pushed us out of the car and drove off. I was relieved when they dropped us off because I thought they were going to rape my girlfriend and kill us."
Kekana later found his car parked at a BP service station in Mamelodi Gardens. The car had been stripped a sound system worth about R10000.
"I am happy to have found my car and to be alive, but I am shattered because I have lost photographic equipment that I bought last month for R70000. I cannot work without it."
Mamelodi West police spokesman Captain Mahlahlane Maheso confirmed the incident and said they were investigating a case of hijacking.
