Search on for GRAVEyard vandals

Canaan Mdletshe

Eshowe police have launched a manhunt for suspects who desecrated a grave at the Mpushini Park Cemetery in the early hours of yesterday.

Cemetery workers on duty alerted the family of the person buried at the site that was dug up.

It is not clear if body parts were removed.

Police spokesman Inspector Mbongeni Mdlalose said Johanna Boucher received a phone call from a cemetery worker yesterday morning who asked her if they had done something to the grave of her late husband Michael.

"Boucher then went to the grave to inspect, and that is when she established that it had been dug up.

"Police were called and found that it had been violated, and it's possible that some body parts were taken away," said Mdlalose.

He said police were investigating a case of violation of a grave and were verifying if there were any body parts that might be missing since the grave was dug up.

"We are waiting for a court order to give us permission to exhume the body to investigate if there have been body parts stolen.

"Once the court grants us that permission, we will then proceed with our investigations," he said.

"But I must say that this is the first incident to be reported in the area."

Police have urged anyone with information to contact investigating officer Constable John Wynne on 083-710-8648, or the crime-stop number 08600- 10111.
