A KwaZulu-Natal South Coast man has been arrested 16 years after he allegedly committed murder.

Khehla Armstrong Nzama has been on the wanted list for 16 years after a warrant for his arrest was issued in 1992.

He was wanted in connection with the murder of Heinrich Bense, 70, of Margate.

Police spokesman Superintendent Zandra Wiid said on March 31 1992, Bense had arrived at his home when he was attacked and subsequently wounded with a bush knife.

She said the suspect had loaded some of Bense's property into a vehicle but did not manage to drive away.

"The suspect was later linked to the crime by means of forensic evidence found on the scene and a manhunt for him began," Wiid said.

"He fled the area but on October 2 2008 he was arrested in Kagiso, Johannesburg, for housebreaking.

He was linked to Bense's murder by means of fingerprints and a warrant of arrest issued in 1992 was executed."

Nzama appeared in the Ramsgate magistrate's court yesterday on a charge of murder and the case was remanded pending further investigation.

He will appear on Tuesday.
