Human trafficking is the third most profitable organised crime syndicate globally after illegal weapons and drug smuggling.
This according to the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).
As the economic powerhouse in the southern African region, and being without legislation that criminalises such trafficking, South Africa was under threat, warned the IOM.
IOM spokesman Nde Ndifonka said: "Since December 16 2007 we are able to charge perpetrators of trafficking for sexual exploitation under the Criminal Law Amendment Act.
"The new Children's Act also has a chapter that criminalises child trafficking, but the chapter is not yet in force."
Exploitation usually entails forced labour, domestic servitude, forced prostitution and trade in human body parts.
As part of Human Trafficking Awareness Week from October 5 to October 11, the IOM will host a film festival at the University of Pretoria today.
It will also present a music concert on Saturday in Newtown, Johannesburg.
