Choral music tops the entertainment calendar in Kimberley, Northern Cape, this weekend.

This through the second in a series of massed choir festivals celebrating two decades of Sowetan'snation-building philosophy and work.

This provincial concept flows from showcases sponsored by Transnet Foundation, the SABC and Sowetan.

It is being taken outside Gauteng for the first time, thanks to funding provided to the Aggrey Klaaste Nation Building Foundation by the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund.

In Kimberley 10 choirs will back soprano Nthabiseng Sithisho, mezzosoprano Kelebogile Dipico, tenors Wayne Mkhize and Donnald Majosi and bass Thesele Kemane.

Also performing are the Kumba Resources, Vae Sa Kimberley, St Mary's and Kagung UCY Choirs, Northern Cape Choristers, Galeshewe Marvelous Voices, Pampierstad Choral Society, Pabalele Chorale, Danielskuil Kago Sesha Melodic Voices and the Colesberg-based Joy of Africa Singers.

The first provincial massed choir festival took place in Ermelo, Mpumalanga, in August.

It featured soloists Nombuso Ndlandla, Nolubabalo Mdayi, Given Nkosi and singer Johannes Ntuli and several choral groups.
