Three municipal workers have been sacked after they were implicated in a drivers' licences scandal.

Jerry Thomo, France Ntombela and Norman Nkadimeng, who were attached to the Emakhazeni municipal licensing department, in Mpumalanga, were initially suspended for six months.

"We can confirm that the three have been dismissed following internal disciplinary procedures and intervention by members of the crime intelligence unit," said municipal spokesman Surprise Nkosi.

"The allegations of fraud and corruption were reported by members of the public."

Nkosi said the internal disciplinary procedures were part of the anti-corruption drive started last year to investigate irregularities in the section.

"The dismissal of the three officials was subject to legal procedures of appeal, which will unfold in due course."
