Surty puts foot down

Newly appointed Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Enver Surty has become the latest public figure to hit out at those who attack the judiciary.

Newly appointed Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Enver Surty has become the latest public figure to hit out at those who attack the judiciary.

"It is reckless and intemperate statements that can have the effect of undermining the judiciary.

"Decisions of the judiciary were constantly being subjected to criticism. But such criticism must be rational and informed," said Surty.

It was Surty's first public speech as minister of justice at the Commonwealth Magistrates and Judges Association Conference in Cape Town last night.

Earlier yesterday Chief Justice Pius Langa also complained about uninformed criticism of the judiciary. - Anna Majavu
