Still welcome

It has come too late but it is welcome nonetheless: a declaration by the community of Alexandra, Johannesburg, to allow victims of xenophobia back into the township.

It has come too late but it is welcome nonetheless: a declaration by the community of Alexandra, Johannesburg, to allow victims of xenophobia back into the township.

The township was gripped by violence aimed at scores of African immigrants who were forced to flee the area, leaving their possessions behind.

Since then the attacks have drawn widespread condemnations from government and community leaders, urging a stop to the mindless violence.

Not surprisingly the xenophobic attacks have damaged South Africa's image abroad.

Those perpetrating the crimes must realise that they cannot fully claim their African identity while despising their brothers and sisters from across the continent.
