Mthandeni Mkhize, a mathematics and science teacher at the Imvungu High school in KwaCeza, near Ulundi, was among the winners of the provincial Teachers Awards.

He won in the category of excellence in maths, science and technology.

Mkhize says the secret of his success is his love for the profession and his passion for teaching maths and science.

Like many others in the area, the school does not have a science laboratory and it is a challenge for him to teach the subject.

But he appears to overcome the handicaps and is teaching it efficiently, as is shown by the 100 percent pass rate of his pupils every year.

"My success is that I plough the passion into the learner's minds," he says. "The right mindset is crucial and once that has been achieved teaching this subject, which is perceived to be difficult, becomes easier." .

He says practical learning is efficient, though the school does not have the resources. He uses old appliances for experiments.

Mkhize won R5000 cash, a personal computer and R5000 and 10 computers for his school.
