Pandemonium broke out at a busy shopping complex in KaNyamazane, Mpumalanga, when four armed robbers fired at a businessman who was going into a bank to deposit money.

The incident happened in front of Standard Bank outside the crime-ridden KaNyamazane shopping complex yesterday shortly after 3pm.

Police spokesman Captain Phillip Fakude yesterday told Sowetan that the 46-year-old businessman from Daantjie Trust had just parked his car in front of the bank and was about to go inside to deposit his money.

Two of the four robbers grabbed him while the others forcefully took his bag that contained R44000. They then fired three shots in his direction, but he ducked and hid between parked vehicles.

"People scattered in all directions to escape the ferocious shooting," said Fakude.

Police said the men jumped into a waiting grey Toyota Corolla and sped off from the scene.

"We recovered three spent cartridges on the spot and shall send them for ballistic tests to strengthen our investigations," said Fakude.

The KaNyamazane policing area is a haven for criminals.

Meanwhile, a 12-year-old boy appeared briefly at the nearby KaBokweni magistrate's court on Friday on a murder charge after he allegedly stabbed a 15-year-old boy to death last week.

He was not asked to plead and the matter was postponed while waiting for a decision by the director of public prosecutions.
