An array of South African sports greats will take part in the yearly Business Trust Long Run, which starts today from Qunu, Eastern Cape, to Soweto.
More than 800 people in various sectors from sports, government and business will battle it out in this event, aimed at raising funds for the communities.
Sports celebrities who have been supporting the event since its inception include Willie Mtolo, Jacob "Baby Jake" Matlala, Josia Thugwane, Zithulele Sinqe and Desire Ellis.
Giant German car manufactures Mercedes-Benz SA are also on board as the transport sponsor for this corporate relay. At a function in Pretoria on Thursday attended by various stakeholders, the company donated a fleet of 19 cars to support the participants.
The Business Trust Long Run was launched in 2002 to allow an opportunity for corporate teams, professional runners, celebrities and government leaders to support community projects initiated by the trust.
The Business Trust is a job-creation initiative aimed at combining the resources of business and government, and accelerating economic and social growth, capacity building and the alleviation of poverty.
Lulu Letlape, executive director of Mercedes-Benz , said they were delighted to be part of this great community upliftment project.
The start and finish points of the relay take place at very significant places - with Qunu being where former president Nelson Mandela was born, and Vilakazi Street, in Soweto, where he lived.
Vilakazi is the only street in the world where two Nobel Peace Prize winners - Madiba and Archbishop Desmond Tutu - lived.
