Rosina Sedibane Secondary School at the weekend lived up to the motto of the Gauteng government - Home of Champions.
Based in Pretoria, Sedibane made history by becoming the first winners of the Vodacom Inter Schools Challenge in Soweto on Saturday.
Sedibane, whose players also do duty for SuperSport United development, defeated Free State's Harmony School 2-1 in the final at Safa Soweto's grounds.
Besides pocketing R200000, Sedibane also qualified to represent the SA Schools Football Association (Sasfa) at the World Schools Cup in Turkey in March next year.
Sinethemba Ngidi and Lebogang Mahongo scored for Sedibane, while Luckyboy Mokoena replied for Harmony.
Also present at the finals were 2010 World Cup Local Organising Committee chief executive Danny Jordaan and Safa Soweto boss Phil "Chippa" Mogodi.
Godfrey Mosoetsa, coach for both Sedibane and SuperSport United, attributed their success to continuous international exposure for the youngsters.
"We really have to channel our energies into soccer development if we are serious about reclaiming our position as one of the powerhouses of the sport globally.
"The advantage for us in this tournament is that the majority of our boys have been playing in more competitive local and international competitions.
"We deserved to win the tournament and credit to the boys for a job well done," Mosoetsa said.
Mandla "Shoes" Mazibuko, Sasfa president, said: "It was a great tournament and we thank Vodacom for coming on board."
The tournament was marred by the expulsion of Mehlokazulu High from KwaZulu-Natal for fielding over-aged players.
Their teacher and coach, Dumisani Zaca, was slapped with a 10-year ban from all soccer activities after pleading guilty to age cheating.
