The North West government's attempts to wiggle out of an out-of-court settlement it reached with lawyers for a brain-damaged Rustenburg boy smack of buffoonery and ill-advice.

The North West government's attempts to wiggle out of an out-of-court settlement it reached with lawyers for a brain-damaged Rustenburg boy smack of buffoonery and ill-advice.

In terms of the deal, the provincial health department was expected to compensate eight-year-old Oteng Machailwe last month, but is now seemingly reluctant to do so.

The department was forced to pay up after one of its hospitals failed to provide Oteng with proper medical care.

It appears the department's officials did not really understand the implications of the settlement. How does one interpret their about-turn.

At best, they will be held in contempt of an agreement they had signed of their own accord.
