The Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital and Vodacom Foundation unveiled the refurbished paediatric surgical ward yesterday.
"It is an initiative that is life- changing for the beneficiaries," said the Vodacom Foundation's Mthobeli Tengimfene.
He said it had always been important for the Vodacom Foundation to work with the most vulnerable people in our society.
"We believe that investing in the children of this country is a worthwhile investment," Tengimfene said.
Serving the entire south and western parts of Johannesburg, Ward 32 of the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital is one of the few facilities offering surgical care to disadvantaged children in Greater Johannesburg.
The facilities offer treatment for conditions such as organ transplants, surgical diseases such as appendicitis, tumors, congenital birth anomalies, trauma and major burns.
The foundation was approached by the hospital to help fund the revamp of the children's ward. The Foundation subsequently pledged R1,6 million towards the facelift.
The do-up included redoing the walls, ceiling and floors. Vodacom also provided recreational facilities for the children, such as a television, books and toys.
The hospital's paediatric surgeon, Peter Beale, said: "To appreciate the changes you really had to have seen the ward as it was before Vodacom came and remade it for us.
"The whole tone of the environment was uplifted to such an extent that the care of the children and infants we have in this paediatric surgery facility is going to be so much better."
He said it was going to be a facility where the nursing staff will want to work.
"And we now have this high care area where the surveillance and monitoring of children who are seriously ill will be improved," Biale said.
