Around 900 potential South African stars in gymnastics and chess will be on display at the national championships in Bellville from today until Saturday.

Around 900 potential South African stars in gymnastics and chess will be on display at the national championships in Bellville from today until Saturday.

The competition is hosted by Sport and Recreation South Africa with the aim of exposing young athletes to competitive sport.

Sipho Maduna, SRSA's media officer said participants were from all the nine provincial structures, adding that the teams were expected in Bellville yesterday.

Maduna said they wanted to expose young athletes to competitive sport in preparation for future sporting excellence.

It will also help fast-track transformation through initiatives aimed at previously disadvantaged communities.

Maduna said competitions like this one help in creating a pool of athletes for national teams. - Ramatsiyi Moholoa
