The Johannesburg high court is today expected to rule on the urgency of an application brought against the SABC and the government by the public broadcaster's group executive for content enterprises Mvuzo Mbebe.

Mbebe wants the court to stop the SABC from appointing a chief operations officer.

Mbebe had been interviewed for the COO position early last year. He was chosen by the board as the suitable candidate and was recommended for appointment to Minister of Communications Ivy Matsepe-Cassaburi.

The minister took months to respond, saying she felt "uncomfortable" about appointing him after consultation with her colleagues.

The recommendation was withdrawn by the board and Mbebe was told to reapply.
