A 32-year-old woman from Ntshawini, outside KwaDukuza, yesterday described how she was burnt with a chemical allegedly poured on her by a jealous nurse.

Nokuthula Mthethwa said a group of attackers stormed her family home on Monday and accused her of stealing another woman's boyfriend.

The enraged nurse is understood to have been paid ilobolo for and promised marriage.

Mthethwa said her attacker poured acid over her, burning and scarring her for life.

The matter is now in court and the woman accused of burning her, Nomvula Luthuli, is out on bail of R1000.

Mthethwa has suffered severe burns to her face and lower body.

She said she was lucky to be alive and that her sin was dating a man "who had paid ilobolo" for another woman.

She said her boyfriend, Edward Mofokeng, works at the same hospital as Luthuli.

"I have received several calls asking that I stop my relationship with him. There were also threatening SMSes, which I ignored.

"I knew about their relationship but I did not know that he had paid ilobolo. I heard about it after the attack.

"I ignored the threats. Then I saw a group of people carrying sticks and they started kicking the door.

"When I went to open she was there with a two-litre container.

"Before I could move it was thrown all over my body. I am burnt from the face right to my knees," Mthethwa said.

Luthuli refused to comment about the allegations. "There is nothing to say. I am out on bail."

Meanwhile, in a separate incident, Zandile Gumede, 30, who had been critically injured after suffering serious burn wounds, has subsequently died.

Gumede, of Pietermaritzburg, was with her younger sister, Thandeka, and her three-year-old child when her former boyfriend visited.

Police spokesman Joey Jeevan said the man allegedly poured petrol around the house.

"Thandeka managed to go out through a window with the child and neighbours rescued Zandile and the man .

Both had suffered serious injuries. The man is at Edendale Hospital," said Jeevan.
