Politician-turned-businessman Andrew "Cosmos" Dipela has dramatically bounced back into big- time soccer administration after landing a plum job.
Dipela has been appointed by the Local Organising Committee (LOC) to serve as Ellis Park Stadium venue manager for the 2009 Confederations Cup and 2010 World Cup.
He will join other prominent soccer personalities starting their new jobs today as venue managers at the various stadiums for the two competitions.
Others include Kirsten Nematandani (Peter Mokaba), Bongi Hlophe (Moses Mabhida), Veli Mahlangu (Mbombela), Shoes Mazibuko (Loftus) and Teral Cullen (Green Point).
Former BidVest Wits chief executive Derek Blackensee was initially offered the job at Ellis Park, but has since been appointed acting chief competitions officer.
This was after Dennis Mumble resigned last month, citing personal reasons, though Sowetan can reveal he had on-going clashes with a senior staff member.
Dipela has been unemployed since resigning from the PSL early this year after he had a disciplinary hearing against three female employees.
Tim Modise, the LOC's communications director, could not confirm or deny the appointment of the ex-Seshego City Carlton and Modimolle Troublemakers winger.
"I know it is a given that we have somebody for Ellis Park as its venue manager. As for Free State Stadium, there is a person who has been identified.
"We will make an announcement at the appropriate time once all the necessary documents have been signed with the people concerned."
In another development, Modise has confirmed that a joint Fifa and LOC technical committee will start with an inspection tour of the venues for the two projects.
"All the operation's people in different aspects of the two projects will be part of the delegation, like those from marketing, broadcasting and the IT.
Modise added there was a joint media meeting between the LOC and Fifa on Monday to prepare for the Confederations Cup draw.
