Trainer Eugene Khanyile vehemently denied yesterday that he and his charge Edward Mpofu were detained at a police station in Mdantsane on Monday night.

It was reported that they were arrested after Mpofu's fight with Thanduxolo Dyani at Orient Theatre. It is alleged that Mpofu, who suffered a controversial points loss decision to Dyani, had been found to have used hardening substance on the tape on his hands.

That gives an unfair advantage. In fact, that is a perfect recipe for destruction, and it is illegal. Such an offence is criminal and warrants life ban from the aport.

"We were never detained," said Khanyile, who refused point-blank to shed more light. "My lawyer advised me not to issue any statement."

But Boxing SA's Phakamile Jacobs, who was the tournament supervisor, confirmed the arrest and added that Mpofu and Khanyile were released on warning, and that they must avail themselves when needed.

It is understood that Boxing SA is in possession of the bandages. Promoter Mzimase Mnguni, who staged Mpofu's lightweight bout, confirmed blowing the whistle to the boxing commission after going inside the ring to shake Mpofu's hands.

"I felt something was very hard when I touched his gloves. I asked Eugene about it, and he said Mpofu must make a living.

"I did not understand what that meant. I then wanted to inspect his gloves, but Eugene told him to run to the dressing room. I then called the officials.

"Mpofu and Khanyile abandoned the normal exit and ran out through the stairs, but the security at the venue gave chase and caught Mpofu, who was arrested and taken into a police van."

Khanyile disappeared. Mnguni said they were later found at the Windmill Roadhouse beneath the trees.
