I am not surprised that the ANC's detractors are speaking about a splinter group. It is preposterous to say the party is splitting in half and is going down the drain because of the current challenges it is facing.
History shows us that after each change of leadership in the ANC there has always been suspicion whether the new leader would be able to keep the organisation together. In the 1969 Morogoro conference, OR Tambo walked out because he was incensed by blatant opportunism that was playing itself out as dissatisfaction about the leadership of the organisation.
In 1990, when the ANC leadership returned home, suspicion ensued that the ANC would disintegrate. It was said an ANC from Robben Island, the ANC from exile and the UDF were contesting for the soul of the ANC.
The ANC is going through a phase that is painful albeit necessary in order for change to come. It will overcome its challenges, but people should brace themselves for a tumultuous time until the elections.
