The mayor of Emalahleni municipality has been suspended.

The ANC in Mpumalanga says it suspended Lena Malatjie for failing to exhaust internal processes when she took the party to court after she was hauled before a disciplinary committee.

But Malatjie says prior to the provincial conference she was aligned to the Lassy Chiwayo camp that was defeated by David Mabuza. The deputy provincial chairman Charles Makola is fast gaining a reputation for purging people who don't support his camp. But Makola said yesterday that Malatjie's suspension had nothing to do with the Chiwayo-Mabuza factions.

"We called her to the disciplinary hearing for misconduct and she took us to court alleging, among other things, unfair labour practices," said Makola.

"We feel that she could have consulted us first and if she was not satisfied, only then should she have gone the court route."

Malatjie confirmed yesterday that she had received her suspension letter and said she felt it was a political ploy to oust her.

The future of eKangala mayor, Speedy Mashilo, also hangs in the balance as swords are drawn between him and Makola, who is the municipality's manager.

At the centre of the clash is the municipal manager post, which became vacant in January and by law should have been advertised.

The ANC regional office has opted to keep Makola in the job.

But sources said moves were afoot to sack Mashilo.

Emakhazeni local municipality mayor Linky Mohlala's position is also under threat because of her involvement the move to advertise Makola's job .

Reliable sources say the council has passed a motion of no confidence in her.
