The South African Football Association's Fezile Dabi region has welcomed the construction of a new state of the art stadium in Tumahole, Free State.
"We appreciate the gesture from Free State provincial government and Fezile Dabi municipality," said Safa regional secretary Gift Poli.
The process of building the new 15 000-seater Fezile Dabi Sports Complex - which will cost R100milliom - has begun.
Safa and the Free State department of sports, arts and culture, led by Ace Magashule, have decided that the facility will be a 2010 World Cup legacy project.
It is expected that the complex will be be completed well on time to serve as a training base for some World Cup teams.
"We are forced to play our games in Viljoenskroon because of lack of facilities in Tumahole. The construction of our own facility is long overdue. There are proper stadiums owned by schools in Parys but their school governing bodies are refusing to allow us to use them for soccer.
"We have asked MEC Magashule to intervene in this matter. This is a democratic country, we should also be allowed to play there," he said.
Masellwane Ntsala, a Safa official in the Free State said: "We are excited that the 2010 World Cup is beginning to benefit our communities. We have been calling for proper facilities for football in our township for a long time. That is why some of the big clubs now play only in the surburbs," Ntsala said.
Samuel Magagula, Safa Fezile Dabi regional president, added: "The new stadium will also enable us to host some of the Premiership's league games.
"We will also bid to host some of the international games. This will contribute to the development of the game," he said.
