Alleged corruption in the allocation of RDP houses has left 466 people in Tembisa homeless.
The 466 people have lodged a case of fraud and corruption against the Ekurhuleni municipality after discovering that the houses they had officially been given in Tswelopele Ext 4 and 5, near the Winnie Mandela informal settlement in Tembisa, are occupied by other people.
They accuse the Metro council of illegally giving their stands to people who did not apply for the government's low-cost houses.
Organiser of the Winnie Mandela concerned residents' association, Victor Morakabi, said yesterday that they were angry.
"These people are fooling with us," Morakabi said. "We lodged a complaint with the provincial department of housing (Gauteng) in 2004.
"We were not happy with their response so we went to the national department in 2005.
"The national office sent police to investigate if there were houses in Tswelopele because their system did not reveal anything.
"We gave the police five names of people who were illegally occupying houses in Esselen Park, where Ekurhuleni had built the houses instead of building for us in Tswelopele.
"The national office got a special investigating unit to take the matter further.
"In June we spoke to the investigators at the national department, who told us they had long finished their investigation and had handed over the report to the presidency, but no one there wants to talk to us."
Sowetan had previously reported that the unit had investigated the matter with the department of housing after former president Thabo Mbeki signed a proclamation instructing them to do so.
But it remains unclear where the final report is.
Sowetan made countless efforts to talk to presidential spokesman Mukoni Ratshitanga, who kept promising to respond but did not.
