A 21-year-old common-law wife allegedly stabbed her taxi driver husband to death in self-defence.
Mathatama Petrus Ramodiba (36), of Ext 24 in Middelburg, Mpumalanga, was stabbed once in the chest with a knife.
He was certified dead on arrival at the hospital, the police said.
Superintendent Abie Khoabane said the incident occurred on Wednesday at about 11:30pm during a quarrel.
Inspector Lisa Coetzee of the Middelburg police said the woman returned early from work and decided to visit her grandmother.
"She allegedly called her husband and told him she was at her granny's house and that he should pick her up after work so that they could go home together," Coetzee said.
She said the woman was later joined by her sister .
The two of them waited together but decided to leave for their homes at about 11pm.
When the woman arrived home the man was sleeping . The woman said her husband suddenly woke up and accused her of having spent the evening with her boyfriends.
"She said he continued to assault her and she grabbed a knife and stabbed him in self-defence," Coetzee said.
Khoabane said the woman fled the scene but called the police yesterday to say she was at her grandmother's place. She is due to appear in court today.
