The move to form a new party that is set to challenge the ANC in next year's elections is gaining momentum.

The new party will comprise mostly disgruntled ANC members who are sympathetic to former president Thabo Mbeki.

On Wednesday Mbeki supporters in Limpopo confirmed the existence of the ANC Activists Consultative Forum (ANCACF) from which the new party is expected to evolve.

Yesterday Sowetan ran an article on the formation of the new party.

Since then the newspaper's office in Limpopo has been inundated with calls from people who claim to be part of the initiative and those who applaud the move.

A Free State member of the initiative said it was only a matter of time before the party was unveiled.

"We have taken a decision to come up with a new party to challenge the ANC come next year's elections," the source said.

He said they felt betrayed by the ANC and thought it was time to act.

"We can assure the public we command a lot of support and will inform them soon about developments," he said.
