South Africans across the country celebrated their cultural heritage and the diversity of their beliefs and traditions.
Magagula Primary School at Magagula Heights in Ekurhuleni also held an event in celebrating the day.
Pupils and teachers took to the stage to showcase their talents. They performed drama and cultural dances from indlamu (Zulu dance) to khiba (Sotho dance). The event was graced by the Magagula cultural committee and the parents.
School principal Selina Molefe said it was the duty of the school to promote South Africa's diverse cultures.
"Magagula Primary School is blessed with diverse cultures. We have Sotho, Zulu, Xhosa, Pedi, Tsonga and Shona-speaking pupils and teachers. We always make it a point to learn and understand each other's cultures.
"By holding the Heritage Day celebrations we are encouraging our pupils to understand and tolerate different cultures.
"To accommodate all cultures we had a great Shona performance. You could see from the pupils who were singing and dancing that they were doing it from their hearts.
"Through cultural activities like this we are able to close the rifts created by xenophobia.
"As a society we need to instil traditions and moral values in our kids.
"To do this we have to go back to our roots and teach them what we were taught by our parents," Molefe said.
