That is when the anticipated tourist footfall into the centre, generated by Southern Sun's new hotel, will bring a whole barrage of new customers.

Already bursting at the proverbial seams with designer wear, international labels and gourmet dining, the addition of new shops such as Belinda, Furla and Jo Malone can only add to the attraction.

The already popular shopping destination will be further enhanced by the luxury Southern Sun Hotel on its doorstep.

The R180 million spent on an upmarket four-star hotel at the centre is part of an asset-enhancing strategy by JSE Retail property fund Hyprop Investments.

Hyprop CEO Pieter Prinsloo says the hotel will be an exciting addition to the successful centre.

"In the light of the expected tourist influx to the country, we identified leisure development as a strategic complement to successful upmarket retail," Prinsloo says.

The three-storey hotel is being built above the shopping centre's sevenstorey parking garage.

Prinsloo explains that "the 132 rooms and public areas will face north, providing panoramic views of Joburg's northern suburbs".

According to Southern Sun managing director Helder Pereira, the group's involvement in the development was a natural progression of its growth and re-positioning strategy.
