Kgalema Motlanthe is a leader who commands respect because of his cool, calm and collected personality. An excellent listener, he will steer the country to calmer waters.

He is the best person for the job until the next polls. That he has an understanding with Jacob Zuma augers well for the ANC and the country.

Motlanthe is to the party and government what Joel Netshitendze has been to the government and party since 1995.

Motlanthe's captaincy couldn't have come at a better time and shows that the post-Polokwane strategies are in place and well executed.

This is probably the last chance the ANC has to undergo a soul-searching metamorphosis that suits current sociopolitical, educational and political needs. It is time it led the country properly.

Thabo Mbeki's bitterness needs to cool off. He should not pursue the court case against Judge Chris Nicholson's ruling on the Zuma matter. He still has what it takes and the country might still need him in another position.

But if his ego gets the better of him he should forever keep his peace. He could be a fantastic writer, judging from his resignation speech that came straight from the heart. His eloquence and mastery of the written and spoken word are his major assets.

Mbeki has done the country proud internationally and for that South Africans will remain grateful.
