A 40-year-old man died after being buried alive when a wall collapsed on him at the Waterval Boven crown mine in Mpumalanga.

The man was driving an engine-propelled machine at the opencast mine when the wall collapsed on Tuesday.

Mpumalanga police spokesman, Superintendent Abie Khoabane, said that it took rescue workers more than five hours to recover the body.

"Rescue workers used all type of equipment to save the man, but unfortunately found him dead shortly after 8pm on Tuesday," Khoabane said yesterday.

He said the man's identity would only be released after his next of kin have been informed.

Meanwhile, police in Mpumalanga have not yet identified a man whose naked body was found in a coal goods train two weeks ago.
