The Limpopo departments of health and social development, and agriculture will today launch a rabies awareness campaign at the Bungeni community hall in the Vhembe district.

The two departments said they viewed rabies as a menace to society and will work closely to stabilise this virulent disease.

Rabies is a deadly disease mainly caused by a virus that attacks the nervous system, which is found in the saliva of animals, particularly dogs.

It is usually transmitted to people and animals by a bite from an infected animal.

At least 26 people have died of rabies in the province in recent times, the majority of them children between the ages of seven and 12.
