Residents of the Thusanang informal settlement on the West Rand will have to wait seven more months to find out whether houses will be built for them.
The Gauteng department of housing said yesterday that 121 families, who have waited 12 years for their houses to be completed, will be catered for in the next financial year.
Last week Sowetan published a story about the families in Westonaria who have had only foundations, pillars and roof structures built since 1996.
Department spokesman Aviva Manqa said the government would make a special effort to attend to the plight of the residents, most of whom are unemployed.
"We have gone to the area and seen the shoddy workmanship in these structures," Manqa said. "We will build proper houses."
Resident Jabulile Khathi said: "That's good news. If they complete our houses we will have electricity, running water and live like all the people who vote."
