No truth on 'dismissals'

The eThekwini municipality has dismissed allegations that drivers of the biggest bus operator in Durban and surrounding areas would be retrenched.

The rumours come after news that the municipality has retaken ownership of the buses. Bus drivers downed tools on Friday on hearing the news that their permanent jobs were to be on a contract basis.

Municipal deputy manager Derrick Naidoo said yesterday no worker was facing retrenchment "because these workers are contracted to the previous operator, which is Remnant Alton".

He could not say when the strike would end. He said the municipality was not part of any meetings that include Remnant Alton and its drivers.
