NORTH CAROLINA - The White House hopefuls stressed their rival plans to bring relief to both troubled financiers and "Main Street" yesterday, after the government proposed a huge Wall Street bail out.

Barack Obama, pictured, and John McCain said they would study the proposal following the state's request to Congress to buy R5747 billion in distressed mortgages.

Obama spokesman Jen Psaki said Obama would ensure the plan relieves hard-pressed workers and homeowners, not just firm bosses and shareholders.

McCain said: "This crisis requires leadership and action to get our economy on its feet and eliminate this burden on hard-working middle-class Americans". - Sapa-AFP
