CASTLE GANDOLFO, Italy - Pope Benedict XVI appealed yesterday to world leaders to take action to end extreme poverty and hunger when they meet at the UN General Assembly.

CASTLE GANDOLFO, Italy - Pope Benedict XVI appealed yesterday to world leaders to take action to end extreme poverty and hunger when they meet at the UN General Assembly.

Benedict spoke to pilgrims at his summer palace in Castel Gandolfo about a high-level meeting of the General Assembly to take stock of progress on goals to end poverty.

The meeting will be aimed at boosting efforts to achieve the Millennium Development Goals adopted at a 2000 summit.

The pontiff urged the leaders to "take and apply the measures to wipe out poverty, hunger, ignorance and pandemics".

He acknowledged that his plea comes at a financially tough time for the West. - Sapa-AP
