An intruder who allegedly sneaked into a homeowner's bedroom died after being axed to death in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Mpumalanga police said a 23-year-old man had been out and returned to his home at Buffelshoek near Acornhoek at about 1.45am.

He walked into his bedroom and found the 39-year-old intruder sitting on his bed.

"The man asked the trespasser what his name was, but he did not respond," said Mpumalanga police spokesman, Superintendent Abie Khoabane.

Khoabane said the man pressed the intruder further, but still received no response. He then collected an axe and returned and hacked at the man several times.

"He later slashed the intruder's throat, apparently to be sure that he was dead," said Khoabane yesterday.

The homeowner then went with his family to a local induna to report the matter and the police were called in.

But the suspect tried to run away when he saw them.

Police shot the suspect in the right leg before taking him to Tintswalo Hospital, where he will remain under police guard.

The axe used in the attack was confiscated by the police and would be sent for forensic tests to ascertain if it was the weapon used.

Meanwhile, another suspect was also shot in the leg after allegedly shooting at police who had arrived to arrest him at Mbuzini near Komatipoort on Friday night.

"The man was wanted for various offences and when he realised we had cornered him, he fired shots at us," Khoabane said.

"We returned fire and shot him in the leg before arresting him.

"He is under police guard at a local hospital."
