Workers from North West dominated the departments of public works and of transport's national sports tournament when they won two of the four gold medals on offer at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Saturday.

The games featured government departments from seven provinces - Limpopo, North West, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Eastern Cape, Western Cape and Free State.

They competed in soccer and netball.

North West scooped the women's soccer category when they beat Eastern Cape 3-1 in an exciting final. North West qualified for the final after beating the local department of roads 2-1 in the semifinal.

Eastern Cape thrashed their home girls from the department of roads 3-1 in the other semifinal.

North West also grabbed gold when their veterans from the transport department overpowered their colleagues from public works by 2-1 in soccer.

On their road to the final, North West transport pipped Gauteng 2-0, while public works walloped Limpopo 3-1. In the men's soccer, Limpopo's public works defeated Mpumalanga 3-0 in the final.

Free State beat Limpopo's transport 1-0 to take home bronze. The netball category was won by Eastern Cape, who pipped Gauteng 6-3 in the final.

"This tournament has created a bond within government employees from different provinces. We encourage our members to be involved in sport activities on a regular basis to keep themselves fit and healthy," said Montwedi Nonjola, the tournament's chairman.
