Gugu Sibiya

Gugu Sibiya

Everybody has a favourite Chaka Khan song.

And it is these songs that will resonate in the Coca Cola Dome in Northgate, Johannesburg, from 7.30pm tomorrow when the elegant songstress takes to the stage with one thing in mind: her audience.

She will belt out a repertoire of songs such as Rufusized, Ask Rufus, Street Player, Masterjam andhits like I'm Every Woman, This Is My Night, Got To Be There, What Cha' Gonna Do For Me, and her biggest hit, I Feel For You.

Khan last released an album in 1998 but never mind, this gal has teak-tough staying power.

Come 2 My House, even though it is 10 years old, is a classic blend of her talent and demonstrates her vocal ability and creative prowess.

Khan is blessed with an amazing contralto voice, vocal range, originality, delivery and a sublime physical presence.

Born Yvette Marie Stevens, the 55-year-old powerhouse is from the Great Lakes in Chicago.

She started a group called The Crystalettes at the age of 11 and a few years later, while working on the Black Panthers' breakfast programme, she adopted the African name Chaka, which is "Woman of Fire" in many African languages.

Her full African name is Chaka Adunne Aduffe Yemoja Hodarhi Karifi. She acquired Khan from a brief marriage in her late teens.

Khan became famous with the band Rufus and her amazing vocal talents and electrifying stage presence yielded a string of classic gold and platinum albums.

She is now a star in her own right after enjoying great success with her solo albums
