One person died and another suffered minor injuries in a crash in Sydenham Road opposite the Greyville Racecourse in Durban yesterday.

It is alleged that the driver of a Mini Cooper lost control of his vehicle.

The vehicle apparently veered to one side, barely missed a tree and crashed into an electric pole.

Paramedics found the Mini Cooper on the pavement and the pole knocked down.

ER24 spokesman Derrick Banks confirmed that the accident took place in the early hours of yesterday.

"A passenger was still in the car while the driver of the vehicle was leaning against a wall near the crash site," Banks said.

"The passenger, who was sitting in the back of the Mini Cooper, was declared dead by the paramedics.

"It is possible that the passenger might have suffered severe neck and other internal injuries," Banks said.

He said the driver suffered slight neck injuries and was treated and stabilised on the scene before he was taken to hospital.

A motorist who drove past described the accident as horrible.

"I saw the Mini Cooper driving past at a very high speed and seconds later there was a loud bang," the motorist said.

Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide and malicious damage to property.
