A VIP guard in the office of the deputy president was mysteriously shot and killed in his sleep in the early hours of yesterday.

Frans Ramashilo was deputy president Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka's bodyguard.

The award-winning Soshanguve gospel group, Masole a Tumelo, of which he was a chairman, is also mourning his death.

Police say two unknown gunmen broke into Ramashilo's Soshanguve house at about 2am while he was asleep.

"The thugs gained entry through a small window in the lounge," said Rietgat police spokesman, Sello Mangena.

Mangena said the men first went to Ramashilo's son's room and ordered him not to scream.

"They then proceeded to his parents' bedroom where Ramashilo was sleeping with his wife and shot him three times," he said.

Ramashilo was shot once in the chest and twice in the stomach. He died instantly.

Nothing was taken in the house.

No arrests have been made.

Police have requested anyone with information to come forward.

Members of Masole a Tumelo said yesterday they were still baffled by Ramashilo's death.

In July, the group buried another fellow singer, Fana Bocube, who died after a long illness.
