The SA Municipal Workers Union has lashed out at Cape Town mayor Helen Zille, accusing her of political interference in the internal matters of the city's metro police.

This follows a decision by the Cape Town metro police to fire 93 officers who last year took part in a blockade of the busy N2 highway. Zille was apparently caught up in the blockade for more than three hours. They were suspended on full pay last year but were called back after a public outcry. The city fired them on Monday. - Anna Majavu
