BEIJING - South Africa could not have asked for a better athlete than Oscar Pistorius to wind up the athletics programme of the 13th Paralympic Games at the Bird's Nest last night.
The massively popular double amputee did not disappoint the South Africans and his myriad supporters when he scooped gold in the men's 400m with a world record time of 47,49 seconds.
It was South Africa's 21st gold medal in the Beijing Games and the country finished sixth on the medal table with 29 medals overall after last night's events.
Pistorius' achievement last night saw him keep up his 100 percent record in the Games after having won golds in the 100m and 200m events.
The crowd, which has backed Pistorius from the beginning of the Games, once again gave the South African an extra spur last night. They went berserk when he was introduced before the start of the race and it was "Oscar! Oscar!" throughout the contest.
"I'm delighted to break the world record tonight. These Games will go down in my memory for a long time," he said afterwards. "... I will work much harder to prepare for the Olympics and Paralympics in London in 2012."
