Police have arrested four armed men who were allegedly on their way to rob a West Rand filling station yesterday.

"We received a tip-off from our informer that there was going to be an armed robbery at a filling station in Glenharvie," Westonaria police spokesman Constable Audrey Sefara told Sowetan yesterday.

Sefara said the informer had given the police the description of the car the four men were going to use in the robbery.

The police acted swiftly and set a trap for the would-be robbers at about 5am.

Sefara said the police officers who had set the trap saw a white Hyundai sedan, which fitted the description of the car the informer had given them, approaching, en route to the garage.

"There were four armed occupants inside the car," Sefara said.

Upon searching the vehicle police found two loaded revolvers and a 9mm pistol.

Only one firearm had a serial number on it while the serial numbers of the other two guns had been removed.

Sefara said other members of the police had been patrolling the area at that time.

The four Soweto men are expected to appear in the Westonaria magistrate's court soon to face charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
