The Communications Workers Union of South Africa has hailed the police for fighting to stop the continued robbery of local artists by people who copy their CDs and cassettes.
This follows on the arrest at the KwaMashu hostel of two men, aged 20 and 22, who were in possession of 200 fake CDs and 200 cassettes, mostly of popular maskandi group Mgqumeni.
Union president Mabutho "Kid" Sithole commended the police for making the arrests.
"This should serve as a warning to those who continue robbing artists that their actions will not be tolerated," Sithole said.
"We also want to urge those providing markets for such pirated items to stop. They are not only robbing the artists but also their families."
He urged the public not to buy pirated music, saying that if the culprits ran out of buyers they would stop stealing.
"It starts with an individual refusing to buy pirated items," Sithole said. "If all of us adopted that attitude the whole thing would end."
Inspector Siwe Nxumalo said the CDs and cassettes were not yet released.
"Mgqumeni received a call informing him about the CDs and he notified the police," Nxumalo said.
The suspects will appear in court soon.
