Besides, one of the consequences of removing Mbeki could be that early elections will have to be held.
In terms of the Constitution a two-third majority of MP's can pass a motion of no-confidence in Mbeki - forcing him to dissolve parliament and call for a early elections. He has to do that within 90 days.
So far some key ANC leaders, including vice president Kgalema Motlanthe, secretary general Gwede Mantashe and Zuma himself have indicated their opposition to early elections.
Recent polls have shown that people on the ground are very unhappy with the current infighting in the ruling party. Their feeling is that the leadership has been fighting mainly for political positions.
More than at any time in its history, the ANC now needs to present a united front.
Yesterday Zuma cautioned that it was "impossible" for the party to go into elections unprepared. This must be seen as a candid admission that the infighting has left wounds that have to heal before the elections.
Axing Mbeki can only exacerbate the situation and add to the ANC's election woes.
