Matshikiza was in a meeting with friends in Melville, Johannesburg, at the time of his death.
The 54-year-old had a long career in theatre, film and television.
Matshikiza has directed plays at various theatres, written and directed documentaries and dramas for television.
He appeared in various films and television drama and programmes.
Matshikiza was also a writer and columnist for various publications, including the weekly Mail and Guardian.
