The Seta (Fasset) has improved the skills of more than 114000 South Africans through its learnerships, development projects, lifelong learning interventions and Adult Basic Education and Training (Abet).

Cheryl James, Fasset's chief executive, says: "Finance, accounting, management consulting and other financial services skills are key to the sound functioning of South Africa's economy. By choosing a career in our sector, young South Africans can make their future count."

There are 19 learnerships that offer a range of entry points for technicians and accountants alike.

Though it is important to factor in one's interests, skills and aptitude when choosing a career, James says it is equally important to ensure that there is a demand for specific skills.

"Career prospects in our sector are excellent. There is a high demand for finance, accounting, management consulting and other financial skills. Because our learnerships meet real skills needs in the sector, Fasset has achieved a 100percent placement rate on completion of its learnerships," James says.

Fasset-funded work readiness projects are increasing the pool of accounting and financial skills that are available in the sector. These projects are also playing an important role in assisting unemployed accounting graduates to find employment.

"By equipping unemployed accounting graduates with workplace skills which enable them to 'hit the ground running', unemployed graduates are transformed into attractive employee propositions," says James.
