One of two men arrested for the murder of a Durban family has died in a shootout with the police.

Prominent Durban attorney, Naren Sham, 56, his wife Meera, 56, and their son Kavir, 20, were murdered two weeks ago at their home in Morningside, Durban.

Police spokesman Jay Naicker said members of Durban's organised crime unit nabbed the men.

"One suspect was arrested in Umgeni Road and a second was arrested at Umlazi," he said.

While pointing out exhibits to the police, one of the suspects took out a 9mm pistol and opened fire on police officers, Naicker said.

They returned fire, fatally wounding the suspect.
